# How to screenshot on Windows 10

*Windows 10's Print Screen key gives no feedback whatsoever, which is why most people think it doesn't work. It does — the image is just sitting on your clipboard.*

## The short answer

- `Win` + `Shift` + `S` — Snip & Sketch area capture
- `Win` + `PrtSc` — Whole screen saved to Pictures › Screenshots
- `PrtSc` — Whole screen to clipboard, no confirmation

## Why Print Screen seems broken

Tap `PrtSc` on Windows 10 and absolutely nothing visible happens. No flash, no sound, no notification, no file. The full screen has been copied to your clipboard and is waiting.

To prove it: open Paint, press `Ctrl`+`V`. There's your screenshot. You can do the same in Word, Outlook, Slack, Teams, or the message box of nearly any app.

This silence is deliberate — it's been the behaviour since Windows 3.0 — but it means the method only makes sense when you're pasting somewhere immediately. If you want a file, use `Win`+`PrtSc` instead.

## Snip & Sketch is the modern method

`Win`+`Shift`+`S` dims the screen and gives you four modes in a small toolbar: rectangle, freeform, window, and full screen. Drag, release, and the capture goes to the clipboard with a notification offering to open it for editing.

Windows 10 ships with both Snip & Sketch and the older Snipping Tool app, which causes confusion. Snip & Sketch is the one behind the keyboard shortcut and the one to use. The older app still has one advantage: a delay timer. [Which is which](https://screenshot-laptop.com/windows/snipping-tool/).

## Make Print Screen open Snip & Sketch

You can get the Windows 11 behaviour without upgrading:

1. Open **Settings › Ease of Access › Keyboard**.
2. Scroll to **Print Screen shortcut**.
3. Turn on *Use the PrtScn button to open screen snipping*.
4. Sign out and back in, or restart.

After that, `PrtSc` gives you the selection overlay. `Win`+`PrtSc` still saves a full-screen file, so you keep both behaviours.

## Windows 10 is out of support

Mainstream support ended in October 2025, so the screenshot tools here won't gain features and the Snipping Tool won't receive the text extraction or screen recording that Windows 11 added. Everything documented on this page keeps working — nothing was removed — but if you want those newer capabilities, they're only in [Windows 11](https://screenshot-laptop.com/windows/windows-11/) or a third-party tool.

## Questions

**Why did pasting give me my old clipboard content instead of a screenshot?**

**Does Windows 10 have screen recording?**

Yes, through Game Bar: `Win`+`Alt`+`R`. It refuses to record File Explorer and the desktop itself, which surprises people, but it records any normal application window fine.

**Is Snip & Sketch the same as Snipping Tool?**

On Windows 10 they're two different apps that do similar things. Snip & Sketch is newer and is what the keyboard shortcut launches. The original Snipping Tool is still installed and still has a delay timer that Snip & Sketch on this version lacks.
