How to screenshot on an Asus laptop
Asus calls the Fn setting Hotkey Mode. And if your Zenbook has a ScreenPad, every full-screen capture quietly produces two files.
The short answer
- Fn + EscFn Lock on most Asus models
- Win + Shift + SWorks on every Asus
- Fn + PrtScIf a single press does nothing
Asus laptops are Windows machines — the Windows methods all work. Two things are specific to Asus.
Hotkey Mode#
Asus's BIOS calls the function-row setting Hotkey Mode. When it's enabled, the printed media icons are primary and traditional labels need Fn.
To change it:
- Restart and tap F2 during the Asus logo.
- Press F7 for Advanced Mode if you land on the simple EZ screen.
- Under Advanced, find Hotkey Mode — sometimes listed as Function Key Behavior.
- Disable it so F1–F12 are primary.
- F10 to save and exit.
Quicker alternative first: Fn+Esc toggles Fn Lock on most current Asus models, with no restart. Look for a padlock on the Esc key.
ScreenPad models capture twice#
This is the genuinely Asus-specific behaviour. Zenbook Duo, Zenbook Pro Duo and several Vivobook models have a ScreenPad — a second screen built into the touchpad or above the keyboard.
Windows treats it as a separate display. So Win+PrtSc produces two PNG files: one of your main screen and one of the ScreenPad. People wonder why their Screenshots folder fills up twice as fast as expected.
If you only want the main display, use Win+Shift+S and drag within it, or use the Snipping Tool's window mode.
On dual-screen Zenbook Duo models the effect is more pronounced, since the second display is full-size and captures at full resolution.
Where the key sits#
Zenbook. Far right of the function row, printed prt sc in lower case. Thinner models squeeze it onto the Insert or delete keycap.
Vivobook. Top row, usually a standalone key.
ROG and TUF. Present, but gaming Asus laptops ship with Armoury Crate and typically GeForce Experience. Both can bind Print Screen to their own capture. The symptom is a capture that happens but never appears in Pictures › Screenshots. How to trace it
MyASUS and Armoury Crate#
Neither adds a general screenshot tool. MyASUS handles updates, diagnostics and fan profiles. Armoury Crate manages performance and lighting on gaming models, and does have its own capture and recording feature aimed at games — useful there, unnecessary for everyday captures.

Why does my Asus save two screenshots at once?
You have a ScreenPad, and Windows treats it as a second display, so full-screen captures include both. Use Win+Shift+S and select within your main screen to get one file.
Can I screenshot the ScreenPad on its own?
Yes — Win+PrtSc already saves it as its own file, so just keep that one and delete the other. Or use the Snipping Tool's full-screen mode and pick the ScreenPad when prompted.
Where is Print Screen on an Asus ROG keyboard?
At the end of the function row. Some ROG models share that cap with a macro or lighting control, in which case Print Screen is the secondary label and needs Fn.
