Where laptop screenshots actually save

Half the time the file doesn't exist. Several methods put the image on your clipboard and nowhere else, which is why the folder is empty.

The short answer

  • WindowsPictures › Screenshots — only for Win+PrtSc
  • MacDesktop, by default
  • ChromebookDownloads, always

Windows#

MethodWhere it goes
Win + PrtScC:\Users\<you>\Pictures\Screenshots
PrtSc aloneClipboard only, no file
Alt + PrtScClipboard only, no file
Win + Shift + SClipboard, unless auto-save is on
Win + Alt + PrtScC:\Users\<you>\Videos\Captures
Snipping Tool recordingsVideos\Screen Recordings
Steam in-game overlayInside Steam's userdata folder, not Pictures
GeForce ExperienceVideos\Captures, in a per-game subfolder

To turn on auto-save for Win+Shift+S: Snipping Tool › three dots › Settings › Automatically save original screenshots.

If OneDrive is set up, your Pictures folder may be redirected into OneDrive. The path becomes OneDrive\Pictures\Screenshots and the local folder is empty. Check the OneDrive icon in the system tray.

Mac#

Default is the Desktop, with filenames like Screenshot 2026-09-11 at 14.32.07.png. If the shortcut itself isn't working, start from the MacBook overview instead.

Three reasons a Mac screenshot appears to be missing:

How to change the location deliberately

Chromebook#

Downloads, with no option to change it for screenshots specifically. They also appear in Tote at the left end of the shelf.

Changing your general download folder in Settings does move screenshots too — including to a Google Drive folder, which is worth doing since Downloads is local storage that a Powerwash erases.

Finding a screenshot you've lost#

Search by the word every system uses in its filenames.

Windows. Open File Explorer, click This PC, and search for screenshot. Better: sort by Date modified to get the most recent first. For a file whose name you don't know, search *.png in your user folder and sort by date.

Mac. Cmd+Space, type screenshot. For a proper search, open Finder, press Cmd+F, set the location to This Mac, and add a Created Today filter.

Chromebook. Open Files, click Recent in the sidebar. Everything from every location, newest first.

If your clipboard capture is gone#

It probably is. The clipboard holds one item, and anything you copy afterwards replaces it with no recovery.

One exception on Windows: clipboard history. Press Win+V. If it's enabled, your last 25 items are there including images, and you can re-paste an earlier capture. If it's not enabled, turn it on now — it costs nothing and saves exactly this situation. Settings › System › Clipboard.

macOS has no equivalent built in. Chromebook holds the last five items at Search+V.

Questions people actually ask

Can I change the Windows screenshot folder?

Yes. Right-click Pictures › Screenshots, choose Properties › Location, then Move. Windows offers to relocate the existing files as well. Win+PrtSc then writes to the new path.

Why is my Pictures › Screenshots folder missing?

Windows creates it on the first Win+PrtSc capture, not at install. If it doesn't exist, that shortcut has never successfully run on this machine — which is itself a useful diagnostic. What to check.

Do screenshots sync to the cloud automatically?

Only if your Pictures or Desktop folder is already cloud-synced. OneDrive on Windows and iCloud Drive on Mac both commonly cover the default screenshot locations, which means captures can leave your machine without you deciding to send them. Worth knowing before screenshotting anything sensitive.
