How to screenshot on a Samsung Galaxy Book

Galaxy Books are Windows laptops with a Galaxy phone's habits — the interesting part isn't taking the screenshot, it's where Samsung lets you send it next.

Galaxy Books run Windows, so every Windows method works. What Samsung adds is what happens after the capture.

The Fn Lock indicator#

Galaxy Book keyboards put a small padlock on one of the function keys — usually F12, sometimes Esc depending on the model year. Press Fn with it to toggle which layer of the function row is primary, and a small light on the Fn key shows the current state.

With the lock set to traditional mode, Print Screen responds to a single press. Samsung also exposes this in Samsung Settings, the preinstalled app, under keyboard options — handy if you can't find the padlock.

Where the key sits#

Look to the end of the function row for a key printed PrtScr. The row is very shallow on the thinner Galaxy Book Pro models, and the key sometimes shares its cap with Insert.

Galaxy Book models with a numeric keypad shift the top row leftward, so the key isn't at the physical edge.

Quick Share is the actual advantage#

This is what makes a Galaxy Book different from any other Windows laptop. Take a screenshot, then send it to a Galaxy phone or tablet in a couple of clicks — no cable, no email to yourself, no cloud upload.

1. Save the capture, or click the Snipping Tool notification.
2. Right-click the file and choose Quick Share.
3. Pick your phone from the list.

It arrives in the phone's gallery within seconds. For anyone documenting something on a laptop and needing it on a phone, this removes the step that normally takes longest.

Multi Control does the reverse: with it enabled, one keyboard and trackpad drive both devices, and you can drag an image between them directly.

S Pen on Pro 360 models#

Galaxy Book Pro 360 and similar convertibles ship with an S Pen. The pen's button opens an Air Command style menu, and depending on your model and the Samsung software installed, that menu can include a screen-write option — capture the screen and annotate it with the pen in one action.

If the pen menu doesn't appear, check that Samsung's pen software is installed and up to date via Samsung Update. The feature depends on Samsung's software layer rather than Windows.

Samsung Notes#

Preinstalled, and a reasonable destination for captures you want to keep alongside written notes. It syncs with Samsung Notes on your phone, so a screenshot filed here shows up on the phone without any transfer step.

Tablet mode#

Folded into a tablet, hold the power button and press volume down. Brief press, not a hold, or you'll get the power menu. Surface reverses this, using volume up instead, which catches people out when moving between the two.
